Emergency Visa Services for India: Fast-Track Entry Options

When urgent business needs require entry to India at short notice, the first thing to establish is what the official timelines actually are. This guide sets out the published minimums for the e-Visa and the sticker visa, the visa-on-arrival facility, the consular emergency route, and the fast-track claims that are not real.

When Standard Visa Processing Is Not Fast Enough

Start from the published minimums rather than from what an agent tells you. For the e-Business visa, India Visa Online requires applicants to “apply online minimum 4 days in advance of the date of arrival” (e-Visa portal). For a regular (sticker) visa, the same portal states that “the Indian Mission/ Post requires a minimum of three working days to process the case and issue a visa depending upon the nationality and excluding special cases” (Visa Processing Time). Those are minimums, not commitments: an application referred for clearance, or one with a document defect, takes longer, and no route is guaranteed.

Board meetings, deal closings, site inspections and family medical emergencies can all require entering India within days rather than weeks. Time pressure is also when travellers become most vulnerable to visa scams, so it pays to know which fast routes are real. One is worth stating up front: there is no express or emergency e-Visa. The Government of India “makes no provision of charging of any emergency fees or additional fees for grant of any emergency / express e-visa”, and the Bureau of Immigration advises that it “does not authorize any agent or intermediaries to charge fees for emergency, express visa, eVisas and eArrival card”.

Separately, and regardless of which visa you hold: foreign nationals and OCI cardholders must complete and submit the e-Arrival Card online within 72 hours before arrival, through boi.gov.in, indianvisaonline.gov.in or the official Indian Visa Su-Swagatam app. It is an arrival declaration, not a visa, and it is easy to overlook on a last-minute trip.

Understanding India's Visa Categories for Business Travellers

Before exploring emergency options, it helps to understand the standard visa categories that business travellers typically use. Each has different processing times, validity periods, and permitted activities.

Visa CategoryStandard ProcessingValidityPermitted Activities
e-Business Visa (e-B1 V)Apply at least 4 days before arrival1 year from grant of ETA, multiple entry; continuous stay per visit must not exceed 180 daysBusiness meetings, trade fairs, setting up a venture, recruitment, sales and procurement
Regular (sticker) Business Visa (B-1)Minimum 3 working days at the mission, excluding special casesSet by the mission and endorsed on the visaBusiness activities generally, including board meetings and contract negotiation; no salary may be drawn in India
Work Visa (E-1)Set by the mission; referred cases take longerTied to the employment contract and endorsed on the visaAll employment, including intra-company transfers; gross salary must exceed INR 16.25 lakh per annum
e-Business Visa — conference (e-B5 V)Apply at least 4 days before arrival30 days from date of arrival, multiple entryInternational conferences, seminars and workshops; organisers must upload details to conference.mha.gov.in and MEA political clearance applies
e-Medical Visa (e-M1 V)Apply at least 4 days before arrival, within a 120-day window1 year from date of arrival, multiple entryMedical treatment at recognised Indian hospitals

For foreign companies establishing or managing wholly owned subsidiaries or branch offices in India, the choice between these categories has regulatory implications beyond mere entry — the wrong visa category can create permanent establishment risk or violate FEMA employment regulations.

Option 1: Regular (Sticker) Business Visa

The regular business visa applied for through the Indian mission or consulate in your jurisdiction carries the shortest published minimum of any route open to a first-time business traveller: three working days at the mission, excluding special cases. Whether you actually beat the e-Visa depends far more on appointment availability than on processing, so check the mission's calendar before assuming this is the faster path.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the Indian mission's website for your jurisdiction to schedule an appointment
  2. Complete the online visa application form at indianvisaonline.gov.in
  3. Submit passport, application form, passport photos, business letter from your company, and invitation letter from the Indian counterpart
  4. Pay the applicable fee — consular fees are fixed by reciprocity and differ for every nationality, so take the figure from the mission's own published schedule
  5. Collect the passport with the visa sticker; the mission needs a minimum of three working days, longer for referred cases

When This Works Best

If you can secure an appointment and need a longer validity than the e-Visa's one year, the sticker visa is the more flexible instrument. It is the usual choice for resident directors, board members and executives who visit India regularly. Two conditions matter for anyone building a business around it: a business visa holder cannot take any salary or remuneration in India — that requires a Work Visa — and extension is granted only where gross sales or turnover from the business for which the visa was granted is not less than INR 1 crore per annum, to be achieved within four years of setting up the business or of the initial grant, whichever is earlier.

Option 2: Consular Handling of a Genuine Emergency

Indian consulates and embassies can deal with genuine emergencies on an expedited basis at the consular officer's discretion. There is no published turnaround for this, and there is no e-Visa equivalent: the Government of India does not operate any express or emergency e-Visa service at all.

Eligible Situations

  • Death of a family member in India — requires death certificate or hospital communication
  • Critical illness of a family member — requires medical certificate from the treating hospital
  • Other genuine emergencies — assessed on a case-by-case basis by the consular officer

Important Limitations

  • Expedition is discretionary — no Indian mission publishes an emergency visa category, a turnaround or an entitlement to one
  • Business urgency does not qualify, however commercially critical
  • Documentary evidence of the emergency is mandatory
  • The Government of India charges no emergency fee: it “makes no provision of charging of any emergency fees or additional fees for grant of any emergency / express e-visa”, and has not authorised any agent to charge for emergency or express processing. Any such charge comes from an intermediary, not from the government

Plan on the basis that this route is limited to medical and family emergencies and that the decision rests entirely with the consular officer. Business urgency — regardless of how critical — does not qualify.

Option 3: E-Business Visa — Removing Avoidable Delay

The e-Business visa has an official floor of four days before arrival and no way to buy speed above it. What you can control is whether the application stalls.

How to Optimise Processing Time

  • Leave more than the four-day minimum — four days is the earliest the portal will accept an arrival date, not a service level
  • Upload a clean photograph and passport page — the portal warns that an inappropriate document or image triggers a re-upload request by email, and the applicant should normally receive that email within 24 hours; every re-upload restarts your own clock
  • Keep the application and the supporting documents consistent — any discrepancy invites additional verification
  • Apply from your country of nationality or residence — applying from a third country attracts extra scrutiny
  • Business letter specifics — include exact dates, specific meeting locations, and named contacts at the Indian company

E-Business Visa Eligibility

The e-Visa eligibility list published on the e-Visa portal currently runs to 174 countries and territories, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, the UAE and the EU member states. Pakistan is not on the list. Check the list itself before planning around it — it is amended without notice.

Permitted activities include attending business meetings and trade fairs, establishing an industrial or business venture, recruitment of manpower, and business-purpose tours. It does not permit employment or paid work, and continuous stay during each visit must not exceed 180 days. A holder who intends to stay beyond 180 days must register with the FRRO/FRO concerned within two weeks after the expiry of the 180 days.

Option 4: Visa-on-Arrival for Select Nationalities

India's visa-on-arrival facility is narrow but, for the three nationalities that hold it, decisive — and it is widely misdescribed. Per the Bureau of Immigration, VoA is available to nationals of Japan, the Republic of Korea and the United Arab Emirates for a stay not exceeding 60 days, and it covers business, tourism, conference and medical purposes, including treatment under AYUSH systems. It is not tourist-only.

Conditions

  • Valid up to 60 days with a double-entry facility; non-extendable and non-convertible
  • UAE nationals qualify only if they have previously held an Indian e-Visa or a regular sticker/paper visa
  • Available to Japanese and Republic of Korea nationals only at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad; for UAE nationals also at Cochin, Calicut and Ahmedabad
  • Not available to holders of diplomatic or official passports
  • Not available where the traveller, or either parent or any grandparent, was born in or was a permanent resident of Pakistan

For a Japanese, Korean or Emirati executive needing to be in India at short notice for a genuine business meeting, this is the only same-day route, and it permits the meeting itself.

Option 5: Intra-Company Transfer on the Work Visa

If your company has an established Indian subsidiary or branch office, an intra-company transfer runs on the Work Visa. The Bureau of Immigration's E-1 category expressly covers “all cases of employment (including intra company transferees)”, so there is no separate transfer visa to look for. Note the standing conditions: the foreigner's gross salary must exceed INR 16.25 lakh per annum unless the sector is one the Government has exempted from the floor; no change of employer is permitted during the currency of the visa; and the holder may not work for more than one company at a time.

The old standalone Project Visa for the power and steel sectors no longer appears in the Bureau of Immigration's list of visa categories. Project deployments are now placed in the business or work categories according to whether the individual will be paid in India, so decide that question first.

Option 6: Third-Party Visa Expediting Services

Several licensed visa service providers offer expedited processing through legitimate channels. These are not government services but authorised intermediaries that can navigate the process more efficiently.

What Legitimate Services Offer

  • Document pre-check — ensuring your application is error-free before submission, avoiding rejection-resubmission delays
  • Appointment scheduling — securing early consular appointment slots
  • Application tracking — monitoring application status and flagging delays immediately
  • Walk-in submission — some service providers have arrangements for same-day or next-day submission without appointment

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Guaranteed 24-hour e-Visa — the Government of India does not offer any express or emergency e-Visa service; any provider claiming this is misleading
  • Emergency fees for e-Visa — the MHA explicitly states it does not authorise agents to charge emergency or additional fees for e-Visa processing
  • Guaranteed approval — no legitimate service can guarantee visa approval; the decision rests solely with the Indian government
  • Requests for original passport before appointment — legitimate services never need your original passport until the consular submission

Strategic Planning: Maintaining Visa Readiness

For companies with ongoing India operations, the most effective emergency visa strategy is to eliminate the need for one.

Proactive Measures

  • Maintain a valid multi-year business visa — all key personnel who may need to visit India should hold a valid 5-year or 10-year business visa at all times
  • OCI card for eligible individuals — a person of Indian origin up to the great-grandchild generation can obtain an OCI card, which operates as a lifelong multiple-entry visa and exempts the holder from FRRO registration. It is not unrestricted: research, missionary, Tabligh, mountaineering and journalistic activities, internship in a foreign diplomatic mission or foreign government organisation in India, and visits to Protected, Restricted or Prohibited areas each need special permission. An OCI card issued to a foreign-origin spouse on or after 3 September 2025 carries an initial validity of five years, extendable to lifelong on scrutiny
  • Know when FRRO registration bites — a business visa holder must register with the jurisdictional FRRO/FRO if aggregate stay in the calendar year exceeds 180 days or continuous stay exceeds 180 days; on a work, student or medical visa valid for more than 180 days, registration is due within 14 days of arrival
  • Keep passport validity current — India requires at least 6 months of passport validity and two blank pages at the time of visa application
  • Maintain invitation letters on file — have pre-drafted invitation letters from your Indian entity ready for rapid visa applications

For Frequent Business Travellers

If your team members visit India more than twice a year, the regular (sticker) business visa is usually the better instrument: the e-Business visa expires one year from the grant of the ETA, whereas the sticker visa's validity is set by the mission and can be considerably longer. Weigh that against the appointment lead time at your mission.

Cost Comparison

e-Visa fees are published per nationality on the e-Visa portal's fee schedule. For the e-Business visa the current figures include:

Nationalitye-Business Visa fee
United States of AmericaUSD 140
United KingdomUSD 242
GermanyUSD 120
JapanUSD 25

A bank charge of 3% is added to the applicable e-Visa fee, and the fee is non-refundable — it pays for processing the application, not for the grant of the Electronic Travel Authorisation. Consular fees for regular sticker visas are set separately by reciprocity; take those from the published schedule of the Indian mission in your jurisdiction. Both schedules change without notice, so verify before you budget.

Special Situations: Visa Extensions and Conversions

If you are already in India on one visa type and your situation changes urgently, you may be able to convert your visa category without leaving the country.

Emergency Extension

If your visa is about to expire and you cannot leave India due to medical reasons, airline disruptions, or other force majeure situations, you can apply for an emergency extension at the local Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). The FRRO has discretion to grant short-term extensions on a case-by-case basis. Carry supporting documentation such as medical certificates, cancelled flight confirmations, or police reports.

Visa Conversion

Conversion of visa type is applied for at the jurisdictional FRRO through the e-FRRO portal (indianfrro.gov.in), and only by a foreign national who is already in India. The Bureau of Immigration's standing instruction is that the application must be made within the validity of the current visa, allowing reasonable time for processing — and that if the conversion or extension is not granted before the current visa expires, the holder must leave India, failing which the stay is treated as a wilful illegal overstay. Conversion is discretionary, category-specific and not available on every visa: a visa-on-arrival, for instance, is expressly non-convertible.

For a detailed walkthrough of the conversion process, see our visa extension and conversion guide.

Common Mistakes That Cause Delays

  • Assuming one route is inherently faster — the e-Visa floor is four days before arrival and the sticker-visa floor is three working days at the mission, but the binding constraint is usually appointment availability, not processing. Check the mission's calendar before choosing
  • Passport name mismatch — the name on the application must exactly match the passport; even middle name discrepancies trigger delays
  • Wrong visa category — applying for a tourist visa when you need a business visa, or vice versa, leads to rejection
  • Insufficient supporting documents — business visa applications without a proper invitation letter from an Indian entity are routinely delayed
  • Applying from the wrong jurisdiction — e-Visa applications should be made from your country of nationality or permanent residence; applying from a third country can trigger additional scrutiny
  • Falling for scam expediting services — use only the official government portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in) or an authorised visa service centre

Key Takeaways

  • The e-Business visa must be applied for at least 4 days before arrival; a regular sticker visa needs a minimum of 3 working days at the mission, excluding special cases — both are floors, not service levels
  • Consular expedition is limited to genuine family or medical emergencies; business urgency does not qualify, and no turnaround is published
  • The most effective emergency visa strategy is prevention: maintain valid multi-year business visas for all key personnel
  • OCI cardholders hold a lifelong multiple-entry visa and are exempt from FRRO registration — but still need a valid passport, must file the e-Arrival Card, and need special permission for research, missionary, mountaineering, journalistic and restricted-area activity
  • Avoid any service promising guaranteed 24-hour e-Visa approval — the Government of India does not offer express e-Visa processing

India Entry Strategy
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get an emergency visa to India for a business meeting?

No. India's Emergency Entry Visa programme is limited to genuine family or medical emergencies such as death or critical illness of a family member. Business urgency, regardless of how critical, does not qualify. For urgent business travel, the regular (sticker) business visa at the consulate carries the shortest published minimum — three working days at the mission, excluding special cases.

How long does the India e-Business visa take to process?

India Visa Online does not publish a processing time for the e-Business visa; it sets a floor, requiring applicants to apply online a minimum of 4 days in advance of the date of arrival. That is the earliest arrival date the portal will accept, not a service level — a document or image the portal rejects triggers a re-upload request and restarts your own timetable, so leave more room than the minimum.

Which countries are eligible for India visa-on-arrival?

Visa-on-arrival is available to nationals of Japan, the Republic of Korea and the United Arab Emirates for a stay not exceeding 60 days, with a double-entry facility, at designated airports. It covers business, tourism, conference and medical purposes — not tourism alone. UAE nationals qualify only if they have previously held an Indian e-Visa or sticker visa. It is non-extendable and non-convertible, and all other nationalities must obtain a visa before travel.

Is there an express or fast-track e-Visa service from the Indian government?

No. The Government of India explicitly states that it does not provide any emergency, express, or fast-track e-Visa processing and has not authorised any agent to charge fees for such services. Any provider advertising guaranteed 24-hour or 48-hour e-Visa approval is not offering an official service.

What is the cheapest way to get a long-term India business visa?

It depends on nationality, because both schedules are set by reciprocity. On the published e-Visa fee schedule the e-Business visa costs USD 140 for US nationals, USD 242 for UK nationals, USD 120 for German nationals and USD 25 for Japanese nationals, plus a 3% bank charge; it runs for one year from the grant of the ETA and caps continuous stay at 180 days per visit. Consular fees for the longer-validity sticker visa are published separately by each Indian mission, so compare the two on the mission's own schedule.

Can OCI cardholders enter India without a visa?

An OCI card operates as a lifelong multiple-entry visa, so no separate visa is required, and OCI cardholders staying in India are exempt from FRRO registration. A valid passport is still required at all times, and the e-Arrival Card must still be filed. The card is not unrestricted: research, missionary or Tabligh activity, mountaineering, journalism, internship in a foreign diplomatic mission or foreign government organisation in India, and visits to Protected, Restricted or Prohibited areas all require special permission. An OCI card issued to a foreign-origin spouse on or after 3 September 2025 has an initial validity of five years, extendable to lifelong on scrutiny.

What happens if I overstay my India visa?

Overstaying is an offence under section 23 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, punishable with imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to INR 3 lakh, or both; the Bureau of Immigration puts the range of penalties under the Act at INR 10,000 to INR 3 lakh for each offence, alongside imprisonment. It is not a per-day charge. An overstay also prejudices future entry to India and future Indian visas. Apply for an extension through the e-FRRO portal within the validity of your current visa, and leave India if it is not granted before that visa expires.
